Overwintering european robin in Pappa Staab's garden

Early this morning we came back from Easter vacation in Germany. This robin has been overwintering in my father's garden all winter - and just when you thought winter was over for good there was the snow again. And Pappa Staab started feeding again. Which gave me the opportunity to take some pics from the kitchen window, my favorite birding spot. Unfortunately, with the 5 x zoom of our little digital camera only. From the same spot I saw a middle-spotted woodpecker on 26th december 2007. This time I also saw a newly arrived male black redstart. I really should start a window list!

View on the hunting grounds of a common buzzard and a couple of kestrels which apparently breed close by. In the background you get a glimpse of the neighbor village Daxberg.

Bird of the day:
Rödhake -- Rotkehlchen -- European Robin -- Rougegorge familier -- Rødhals (DK) -- Roodborst (NL) -- Pettirosso europeo-- Erithacus rubecula

Sehr Schön!

We might be in Germany this fall. The in-laws there have a hedge just like the one in your photo and there always seem to be robins skulking in it.

Great! I didn't know you had German in-laws! Where are you going to be? Let me know if you need any help on German birding sites.

They're in Berlin/Brandenburg. I haven't found any good websites for the area and I haven't found anything for Germany nearly as good as the site you have your Swedish list posted on (artportalen.se/birds?), so if you know of any, I'd love to see them. I've found most of the common residents in Germany, but I'm having trouble finding the more localized birds like Bearded Tits or Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers. Your blog has several subjects that I'm interested in, with the German connection, suburban birds in northern Europe, bird names in different languages, and Sweden which I hope to visit again someday, although the new Ikea here is the closest I'll get for a while I think.

Snow in March in Greece Odysseas? I guess it has to do with altitude?

Bradp, my villagew lies 850 m high!
I have seen snow in the past, also in April!

The best site that I found so far is this one:

http://www.naturgucker.de/natur2.dll/EXEC

Not remotely as good as the Swedish Svalan, but better than nothing. :-)

Excellent, thank you! That's a great site, the best I've seen for Dland. At the very least I can use the Google maps part of the site to find new birding spots. One thing though, the Ossis need to get out and bird more! (or at least report more)

I agree! Guess it's partly because Germans aren't quite as internet-active as Swedes or Americans - yet. We're getting there eventually. :-)

By the way, concerning bearded tit, I saw several reports at the Baltic sea coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - that's not too far away from Berlin, right? I would actually LOVE to go there myself some time, Meckelnburg-Vorpommern must be beautiful.

You're right, I dug around and found the reference to Bearded Tits. They reported them near Rügen which we were considering for a weekend trip anyway. So, to Rügen perhaps? I just hope we can get there during fall migration and not during the winter doldrums like my last few trips to Europe.
